4 places to go during Museums Week

Monday 13th May, 2019

Celebrate International Museum Week (13-19 May) with us and visit these excellent museums across Renfrewshire.

It’s the perfect time to explore and learn more about our fascinating history!

Renfrew Town Hall

Renfrew Museum

We’re always happy to have a reason to go to the stunning Renfrew Town Hall building. With its Disney Castle-style tower, it’s a beautiful building to admire on the outside … and have you ever visited the museum inside?

Renfrew Museum is a 4-star VisitScotland-rated attraction telling the story of the town’s past and present. Based on the four elements (Earth/Fire/Air/Water), visitors to the museum are treated to an interactive experience with spectacular objects, pictures, film and audio – all making this well worth a visit.

Fancy combining a museum visit with a spot of shopping?

Established and run by the Johnstone History Society, this small but very informative museum is hosted by Morrisons supermarket.

It showcases local industrial history, social artefacts and a host of memorabilia telling the fascinating story of the town.

Paisley Thread Mill Museum

Paisley Thread Mill Museum

Paisley is often described as ‘the town that thread built’ and you can learn why with a visit to this museum housed in one of the fine buildings of the Anchor Mills complex.

A wonderful collection of artefacts, photographs, thread samples, machinery, patterns and much more tell the story of the rise of the Coats and Clarks families to global prominence.

A must-visit for anyone interested in textiles, fashion and clothing manufacturing.

Paisley: The Secret Collection

Paisley: The Secret Collection

It’s not a secret anymore… you can visit the first publicly-accessible museum store on a UK High Street – right here in Paisley.

This huge basement unit is home to tens of thousands of items from Renfrewshire’s museum collections.

It’s free to see inside but you will have to book a tour in advance.

Find out more about our 'fantastic four'

This is one of the most radical briefs I have read – it triggered in us a desire to tell the untold history of Paisley and search for a narrative thread that will drive the design. The project is bigger than the building itself and I am excited to re-imagine the relationship between the street and museum. This is not only about finding the way to best show the museum’s collection - it’s also about showing the world how an ambitious cultural project can have a profound impact on a community and its identity.
