4 things to do this weekend – 2 June

There are Gala Days, festivals and shows galore in Renfrewshire this weekend.

Whether you fancy shouting ‘Yee-haw!’ at a western-style celebration or taking in the sights as 12 stunning floats pass through one of Scotland’s most historic village parades, there’s loads of fantastic fun to be had for all the family.

Houston Agricultural Show

Taking place on the first Saturday of June every year, the Houston Agricultural Show provides a fun filled day out for all the family. Head along to Houston Playing Fields to see the host of cattle, sheep and horses on display and find out which will be judged best in the show. Enter your prize pooch into the dog show and enjoy great entertainment in the Houston’s Got Talent competition. There’s even a craft and baking section – so don’t miss out!

Lilias Day Festival and Historic Parade

One of Scotland’s most historic village festivals, including a parade featuring masterpiece floats honouring 15th century Piper Habbie Simpson. Lilias Day is a Renfrewshire favourite with the celebrations led by Miss Lilias to Kilbarchan Park. Come along and enjoy the host of entertainment with arena events, a food village, music tent, kids zone, a craft village with local producers and more.

Rose Room

Scottish Jazz Awards’ finalists Rose Room are one of Scotland’s leading ensembles – and you can catch them live in Paisley this weekend. Violinist Seonaid Aitken, who was also crowned Best Vocalist at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2017, will be accompanied by top musicians Tom Watson, Tam Gallagher and Jimmy Moon to recreate the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris of the 30s and 40s with Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.

Renfrew Gala Day

Saddle up for a western-style celebration at this year’s Renfrew Gala Day at Robertson Park. Join the parade at Canal Street and mosey on down to Robertson Park to enjoy the funfair and inflatables, live acts including the Jazzle Dazzle and Karen Moir dance schools, western games and activities with Renfrew Football Club and Paisley Rugby Club. It’s sure to be a toe-tappin’, hip-slappin’ day out for all the family.

More things to do

I regularly visit the Paisley Museum and Art Galleries and Paisley Arts Centre and try to attend as many of the festivals and events in the town as possible... I particularly enjoy Sma’ Shot Day.
