Be a tourist in your town – Linwood and Elderslie

Friday 21st August, 2020

Renfrewshire neighbours Linwood and Elderslie both have great stories to explore as well as great shopping and dining out experiences for visitors.

Linwood

Linwood was one-time home to the Rootes car plant, manufacturer of the Hillman Imp, a revolutionary small car which went into production in Linwood 1963, and was not discontinued until 1976.

Elderslie

Famous as the birthplace of Scotland’s Braveheart, Sir William Wallace (1274-1305), this pretty village has plenty to offer visitors.

Activities and sights

Linwood has plenty to keep people entertained at The Pheonix Retail Park where people can catch a film at the 14 screen Showcase cinema, or grab something to eat at the many restaurants and cafes. There are also some great shopping options available – from car dealerships and toys to interiors and clothes.

If you are looking to enjoy more local history then a visit to Elderslie’s memorial to Scotland’s national hero, Sir William Wallace (1274-1305), is a must. Set on the traditional site of his home in Elderslie the memorial is made up of a series of sculpted plaques around a column reminiscent of a market cross. The plaques illustrate the key moments in Wallace’s career as Knight of Elderslie and Guardian of Scotland.

An Elderslie must-visit is the Butchers Steak and Grill, which won the ‘Scoff the Ball’ award for the best steak in Scotland according to Scottish Sun foodie Tam Cowan.

Elderslie Golf Club is a popular 18-hole course with panoramic views across Renfrewshire which was first opened in 1909.

Eating, drinking and shopping

Both Linwood and Elderslie are home to great local shops, cafes and restaurants. Here are some of the places people love to visit in the town.
