Paisley Weekly Gig Guide – 26 October 2018

Friday 26th October, 2018

Last week’s offering of live music in Paisley was top notch.

The Spree – Paisley’s nine-day arts festival – conjured up a magical time for music lovers. Top acts, including Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Big Minds, Gang of Four, The Danny Kyle Stage at The Old Swan Inn with over 30 acts, Tony Iomni, The Orb and much more saw Paisley buzzing with live music over the last two weekends.

The final day was amazing as Mods from all over Scotland turned up at the annual ModStuff event, with 140 scooters taking part in a ride out and six bands on stage. The day was a charity event and both Renfrewshire Carers and Loud n Proud benefitted from the kind hearted Scooter Clubs and Mods. Around 2,400 attended the daytime session!

The Spiegeltent is at the heart of the festival. I passed by at the beginning of the week and saw it being taken down and felt a bit deflated – but it’ll be back next year and I can’t wait.

The Bungalow is delighted to announce that they have local band The Sectors in tonight. The Sectors are influenced by 60’s Garage / Mod / R&B / Psych & Soul. They play straight ahead, right in your face, energetic covers by The Jam, Small Faces, The Who, The Kinks, Ocean Colour scene, The Yardbirds, The Move, Paul Weller, Northern Soul & Britpop classics. It’s free entry and starts at 8pm.

On Thursday, The Bungalow have another Introducing Night. They will be ‘introducing’ you to
Wrthless and Ghost Baby. Wrthless have only been performing under that name for the past 6 months but collectively they have been playing together since 2014, as Miami Monroe. In that short space of time they have supported Better Days, Take Today, Carousel Kings and appeared at Pop-Punk Pile-Up.  Ghost Baby are a young and vibrant band that are new to the scene, but already making a name for themselves. Starts at 7.30pm.

Jen Sloan of The Cave has announced ‘Let the Ghoulish Games Begin’ Halloween at The Cave is back this year and it’s better than ever. Pop in and celebrate this favourite time of year with live music from Cherry Red 53 and the Halloween party favourites, three years running – Wreckless. The fun begins at 6pm including food, prizes for best dressed and Halloween themed games, props and music. The Splendid Suns are in tonight at 9pm and on Sunday Loanhead kick off at 6pm.

The Old Swan Mojo Filter tonight at 8pm and tomorrow The Old Swan has a double header starting with Epic at 4pm in ‘The Shopper’s Slot’ followed by the incredible trio, Lonehead. On Monday at 3pm, The Casual Swans are back with another afternoon of great music. Last week, the Casual Swans were on a bit later than usual due to the Danny Kyle Stage which was part of The Spree. The amazing keyboard player Marco Caffolo of Federation of a Disco Pimp was part of the line up and it was a real treat. You never know who is going to turn up but what is guaranteed it is always top class. The regular acoustic session is on at the usual time of 6pm on Wednesday.

Open Mic Nights this week:

  • Friday: Stevie Johnstone at Hamishes Hoose from 8pm
  • Sunday: The Bungalow with Cat Caldwell from 8pm
  • Monday: The Abbey Bar hosted by Dunky Hunter at 8pm and The Wee Howff with Graeme Kerr

Support your local venues and keep music live.

Paisley has a good reputation with the bands – they want to play to a crowd that appreciates them and they get that here.
