Paisley set to host UEFA Women’s U19 European Championships

Thursday 11th July, 2019

Paisley is getting ready to host the UEFA Women’s U19 European Championships – one of the football body’s flagship European youth tournaments.

The Simple Digital Arena, home to St Mirren FC, will stage a number of matches from 16 – 28 July, along with McDiarmid Park in Perth, Forthbank Stadium in Stirling, and Firhill in Glasgow.

The Tartan Army will be able to see all of Scotland’s group games in Paisley, as well as the final on Sunday 28 July.

The tournament begins just days after the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, where Scotland’s senior women’s team qualified for the first time.

The UEFA Women’s U19 European Championships aims to expose talented youth footballers to elite level competition in preparation for stepping up to the senior stage to represent their country.

Scotland will be joined at the tournament by Belgium, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, and current holders Spain.

Defender Michaela McAlonie told VisitScotland: “This has already been an exciting summer for Scottish women’s football, and will now culminate with the Women’s Under-19s Euros.

“Scotland has shown in the past that it can host world class events and this one will be no different.

“The players can’t wait to play in front of a passionate home crowd and hopefully the country gets behind us, like they did for the ‘A’ squad’s World Cup debut in France.

“Young girls now have female footballing role models and hopefully over the course of July we can continue to help inspire the next generation.”
