Johnstone is one of the larger towns in Renfrewshire and lies three miles west of Paisley town centre.
Back in the day Johnstone’s main industry was thread and cotton, with mills powered by the Black Cart Water which runs to the north of Johnstone. A six-storey cotton mill, one of the largest in Scotland, was built in 1782, and was rescued from failure by Robert Burns of Paisley sometime before 1812.
Located in the heart of the town centre, the newly refurbished, award winning Johnstone Town Hall offers state-of-the-art facilities including the latest technological and conference suite, theatre, dance studio, marriage suite, meeting rooms, Johnstone library and a café.
The town also has various leisure facilities including Johnstone Community Sports Hub featuring a 25-metre swimming pool, gym, sports hall, multi-purpose hall and a full size synthetic football pitch incorporating three seven-a-side pitches.
Johnstone also benefits from local shopping and a variety of cafes and restaurants including, Papamacs Gourmet Kitchen, Trattoria Roma, Callum’s Bar and Restaurant amongst others.
Johnstone History Museum is situated in Morrisons Supermarket and is run by the volunteers of Johnstone History Society and contains archival material from two of the town’s best known firms, Wm. Paton Ltd and Clifton and Baird, as well as other valuable material relating to aspects of the town’s heritage.

Johnstone railway and Milliken Park railway stations link the town to Paisley, Glasgow and the Ayrshire.
The Clyde to Forth cycle route – National Cycle Route 75 runs through Johnstone and on to Gourock and Dunoon.
Johnstone benefits from five primary schools including Thorn Primary School, Auchenlodment Primary School, St Margaret’s Primary School, Cochrane Castle Primary, St David’s Primary School. Johnstone High School and St Benedict’s High School are the local high schools.
