This small town owes its existence to the building of cotton and flax mills in the 18th century.

The expansion and economy of Linwood from 1961 onwards relied heavily on the manufacturing of cars. In particular, the Hillman Imp made Linwood’s name. This revolutionary small car went into production in 1963.
