The Dark Stuff – by Donald Murray is not only about a young boys childhood spent on the moors of Lewis cutting and gathering peat for fuel. It is also an exploration of the lives of those spent on moors around the world – from the Netherlands to Australia. Donald explores the roles of the Peatland and how in many places it continues to be a huge part of working life today.
Also discussed are the ways in which the moorland has been portrayed in literature, art and folktales for many centuries and the love that we should feel for such a beautiful and under appreciated landscape.
Donald will be with us to discuss his book along with the Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes.
