Paisley TH.CARS2 Events for Renfrewshire’s Doors Open Day 2019

Living Historians

The Living History Crafts Event comprised:

• Craft Demonstration – stone
• Craft Demonstrations – textiles
• Participatory Craft activities – textiles

The Living History Crafts Event took place under 5 heritage style tents on Abbey Close across the path from the Abbey Drain.

7 living historians in 14th century costume occupied the tents for the duration of the event: 5 gave textile demonstrations, with 2 of those 5 offering the public simple participatory activities in naal binding (similar to felting) and finger braiding (similar to finger knitting); 2 offered a stone carving demonstration, adding detail to a work in progress (a limestone font).

 

Heritage Film Programme

A programme of short, community made films, exploring aspects of Paisley’s history were shown at the St Mirin Chapel, Paisley Abbey.

Five films played on a loop in the following order:

 

  • ‘The Big Dig 2019’ by UWS

Documents this year’s archaeological dig

 

  • ‘Coats Tales’ by Kevin Cameron & Create Paisley

Considers the architectural legacy gifted to Paisley by the Coats & Clarks families

  • ‘Paisley in Stitches’ by Kevin Cameron & Gillian Steel, The Tannahill Centre, Renfrewshire Council Youth Services, Project Z, Roar Connections for Life, the Paisley Patchers, Barnardo’s Works, Paisley & District U3A

Captures locals’ stories of making and wearing homemade clothes in the post-war period

  • ‘Special Concrete’ by Mandy Mcintosh & STAR Project

Creatively explores the work of James Steel Maitland

  • ‘We are the Walrus’ by Mandy Mcintosh & STAR Project

Tells the story of Paisley’s Grand Fountain and its restoration

 

Weaving & Spinning Demonstrations

As part of the Artisan’s Institute project for Paisley TH.CARS2, a demonstration by Glasgow Clyde College of traditional textile skills was held, with the opportunity to try your hand at spinning and weaving on offer for visitors.

 

 

 

 

Paisley TH.CARS2 is funded through the 5-year Paisley TH.CARS2 regeneration project and forms part of a wider community engagement programme focused on Paisley’s Textiles and architectural heritage.

Paisley TH.CARS2 is a Renfrewshire Council led project with match funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.
