Riding the Waves: Olumide Popoola

Friday 26 April, 2024

London-based Nigerian German author Olumide Popoola joins us to introduce her brand new novel, Like Water Like Sea, which deals with themes of grief, mental illness, and identity through a young protagonist coping with the mental health struggles of her mother and sister. As we follow the emotional tidal waves which unfurl over decades of Nia’s life, we understand more about the connective tissue of family, and discover the hope that can be found through memories, new possibilities, and a love of dancing.
Olumide Popoola is a prolific writer of many genres, including novels, plays, critical essays and short stories. Her first full length novel, When We Speak of Nothing, explored rising racial tensions in London through two teenagers, delving into what it means to be young, black and queer in 21st Century Britain.
This event will be chaired by Clementine Burnley.
