‘Performers were frequently the subject of art, whether circus, theatre or dance. Their often decorative costumes had obvious appeal to artists concerned with colour and patterning. Some artists concentrated on the act of performance, its beauty, drama or thrill, others on preparations for a performance, others on the audience. This tour will look at a variety of artworks by artists including Joseph Crawhall, Phil May and James McNeill Whistler.’
