The Kimono: a portrait of a Japanese family

Thursday 10 October - Sunday 15 December, 2019

This exhibition on display in the Visitor Attraction presents a personal collection of Japanese kimono in the context of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s House for An Art Lover. The small collection dates from the early 1950s to more recent examples and shows examples of day-wear as well as the kimono designed for traditional ceremonial wear. The exhibition shares a particular social history of one Japanese family, which is illustrated in the choice of materials, decoration and colour of the kimono collection.

The exhibition is from the private collection of Yoshino Saito Brown, and curated by Alison Harley of The Textile Collective. It has been programmed in tandem with the exhibition Part Seen, Part Imagined which will be on display in the Studio Pavilion in October.

Find out more about opening times and admission prices on House for an Art Lover’s website.

This is an official event of the Japan-UK Season of Culture 2019-2020 kindly supported by The Japan Society of the UK and Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, London.
