Artisan’s Institute – Digitally Printed Textiles
Jan 2020 – May 2022
Participants/consultant: Makerspace Paisley YMCA, Disability Resource Centre/Josef McFadden
Local illustrator and print designer Josef McFadden was appointed to lead workshops with two different groups exploring Paisley’s printed textile heritage. In response to this research, and employing a variety of techniques such as digital drawing and image manipulation, participants each developed their own repeat pattern, digital designs. These designs were digitally printed onto fabric and displayed publicly in Paisley town centre.
The first exhibition of work took place in November 2020 on Paisley High Street, in the window of ReMode. These designs were created by a group of young people from Makerspace Paisley YMCA through a series of online workshops. The exhibiting designers were: Ameerah Kiani; Mohammed Junaid Kiani; Charley Morrison; Harris Provan; Willow Provan; Alasdair Riddell; Adebiyi Roland; and Nabeeha Shahid.
The second exhibition took place from April to May 2022 on Causeyside Street, in the window of The Art Department. These designs were created by a group of adults from the Disability Resource Centre through 2 blocks of face-to-face workshops in spring 2020 and spring 2022. The exhibiting designers were: Brenda Caldwell; Kirsty Brown; John Brennan; Ian Fulton; Jim Kerr; Chris Chetty; Tom O’Connor; Campbell Don; Jay McMaster; Reg Hannen; Duncan Townson.
