Held Fast: Jessie Wylie Newbery, an inspiration

Artist Mandy McIntosh and participating makers from the STAR Project presented an exhibition of stitched textile artworks inspired by research into the life & works of Paisley born artist & embroiderer Jessie Wylie Newbery (1864-1948).
As part of the exhibition, an Artist’s Talk and two afternoon Textile Skills Sharing sessions took place.
An active figure nationally in both art and politics, Jessie Wylie Newbery founded the Embroidery Department at Glasgow School of Art; was a mentor to The Glasgow Girls; was instrumental in the creation and public promotion of the Needlework Development Scheme; and was a member of the Women’s Social & Political Union.

Saturday 2 March, 5pm – 6pm
Mandy McIntosh and the participating makers expanded on their work, the impact of the Jessie Wylie Newbery study and the processes which led to the exhibition.
Textile Skills Sharing:
Monday 4 March & Monday 11 March, 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Mandy McIntosh hosted informal skill sharing with participants and groups based on her personal craft library collection.
